Spring is really here, now!

Although it is here since March, on the calendar, we truly felt the arrival of Spring – sometime in April. That is especially true, in the real estate market.

By the end of April, the Realtor’s Association of Hamilton Burlington, reported that Spring had arrived in our market – with more listings and sales going through the MLS system.

Property sales are not only higher than April last year, they are the second highest in the month of April for the last 20 years!

Stats vary depending on the community – if you are curious to see what is happening in your own neighbourhood, click on the Stats tab on my website, or contact me for more information about real estate.

Talk to you soon,

This time, Nicolette and her friendly helpful servers treated us to an Italian feast; it was delicious!

Thank you Good Earth Winery for this very pleasant moment of Dolce Vita.

Low interest rates are here to stay – for a while longer

The Bank of Canada announced, at the end of January 2013,  that it will keep its interest rate at 1% – where it has been for the last 2 years.

With the Canadian economy gaining strength, it is forecasting a growth rate near 2% in 2013 and 2.7% in 2014.

It is modest – but positive enough to maintain low inflation and low interest rates – and with that outlook, interest rates hikes are “less imminent than anticipated”.

The Canadian household debt is still an important concern of the Bank – however, improvement is visible as the housing market activity stabilizes at sustainable levels.

All this to say – the Bank of Canada is in no hurry to raise interest rates, anytime soon, and is keeping its advertised 5 year lending rate at 5.24% – rate unchanged since beginning June 2012.

This will help with budget planning for housing expenses - in the near future.

Highway plans for Niagara Region

The southern part of Niagara Region may be a step closer to getting a new highway, linking Hwy 140 to the QEW at its southern end. While this project may take 10 years to realize, it will assist in the growth plan set for the southern tier of Niagara Region known as gateway economic areas.

As the province is still planning on widening the QEW between Hamilton and St. Catharines, from 6 lanes to 8 lanes – will the plans for the new highway be competing with for that limited provincial money?

It would appear that both projects are necessary as even an 8 lanes QEW may not be sufficient to handle the traffic projected in 20 years.

Niagara Region Public Works realizes the importance of this project to the Region’s Economic Development and is going forward making this south Niagara project  a top priority on the Ministry’s five year construction plan.
